Best Time of Year to Elope in Balboa Park

If you’re wondering when’s the best time to elope in Balboa Park, the good news is: it’s stunning year-round. But certain months shine a little brighter.

• Spring (April–May) - The gardens come alive, especially the Alcazar Garden, bursting with color. The weather is mild, and crowds are lighter before summer.

• Fall (September–November) - My personal favorite. Warm but not too hot, golden light, and fewer tourists. The sunsets are unreal.

• Summer (June–August) - Gorgeous light but very busy, especially on weekends. If you dream of privacy, go early morning or on a weekday.

• Winter (December–February) - Peaceful, romantic, and surprisingly mild — perfect for couples who don’t mind a little adventure (and maybe a cozy umbrella moment!).

Light changes everything — especially when it comes to elopement photography in San Diego.

• Early Morning (7:00–9:00 AM) – The park is quiet, the air is fresh, and the light is soft and flattering. This is the best time for privacy — before the museums open and crowds arrive.

• Golden Hour (1 hour before sunset) – Dreamy, golden light that turns the park into a fairytale. The Lily Pond glows, and every corner feels cinematic.

• Avoid: Midday (12–3 PM) when light is harsh and the park is busiest.

• My top pick: Weekday morning around 8–9 AM, or start your session about 90 minutes before sunset for that perfect golden glow.

There are so many beautiful elopement locations in San Diego, but these are my absolute favorites inside Balboa Park.

• Lily Pond & Botanical Building – The most iconic backdrop. Morning light makes the water glassy and still — a perfect reflection shot.

• Alcazar Garden – Inspired by Spanish gardens, it’s filled with fountains, flowers, and mosaic tiles. A peaceful, romantic spot for vows.

• Cactus Garden – A little off the main path, this area feels like a secret oasis. Beautiful textures, light, and privacy.

• The Prado & Casa del Prado Arches – Elegant architecture, soft shadows, and that old-world charm. It’s pure magic for portraits.

Do You Need a Permit to Elope in Balboa Park?

This is one of the most common questions I get as a San Diego elopement photographer — and the answer depends on what kind of ceremony you’re planning.

If it’s just the two of you, no setup, no chairs, no décor — you likely don’t need a permit. You can exchange vows, wander, and take photos freely.

But if you’re planning a small wedding ceremony with guests, floral décor, or music (like a violinist or guitarist), you’ll need a Wedding or Special Event Permit from the San Diego Parks & Recreation office.

Here’s what to do:

• Contact the permit office early — online, by phone, or email.

• Explain your setup (number of guests, décor, musicians, etc.).

• Ask about fees and deadlines (they vary by location and setup).

• Apply early — some popular spots fill up fast.
